Why building a successful business isn’t about working harder. It’s about working with greater intention.

Success Shouldn’t Cost You Your Health

There is a question I get asked almost every week.
Usually, it comes after someone learns a little about my story.
“How do you run two businesses when you can only work around 12 to 15 hours a week?”
It’s a fair question.
In 2022, my life changed dramatically after an accident left me with a permanent brain injury and chronic pain. Overnight, the way I worked, planned and lived had to change.
I could no longer rely on long hours or pushing through exhaustion. Instead, I had to completely redesign how I built my businesses.
Recently, I had the privilege of sharing that journey on the Founders Future Podcast, powered by Closers.io. Along with entrepreneurship, we spoke about sustainable business growth, organic marketing, mentoring, leadership, and why I believe founders need to stop measuring success by how busy they are.
While the podcast was only around 30 minutes long, the conversation reinforced something I’ve believed for years.
The future of business isn’t hustle.
Its intention.
It’s clarity.
It’s sustainability.
Today, I wanted to expand on some of the biggest lessons from that conversation because I believe they’re essential for every business owner.

My Journey Didn’t Start With The Growth Manager

People often assume The Growth Manager was my first business.
It wasn’t.
My entrepreneurial journey started when I was just 12 years old.
I began designing and making clothing, thanks to a mum who recognised my creativity and encouraged me to turn it into something more. That little business funded many of my early passions and sparked a lifelong love of entrepreneurship.
As my career evolved, I worked across fashion, sales, marketing, business development and e-commerce before eventually mentoring businesses through a bookkeeping education company.
Something unexpected happened during that role. I realised my favourite part wasn’t building one business. It was helping hundreds of business owners build theirs.
That became the foundation for The Growth Manager.
Today, our mission remains exactly the same.
Helping business owners create businesses that support their lives, not consume them.

Business Owners Don’t Need More Information

One of the biggest misconceptions in business is that success comes from learning more.
Another course.
Another webinar.
Another marketing trend.
The reality is very different.
Most founders already know enough to move forward.
What they’re missing is clarity.
During the podcast, I spoke about the biggest gap I consistently see in business. There is no shortage of information. There is a shortage of personalised strategy.
There is no shortage of information.
There is a shortage of personalised strategy.
Business owners are overwhelmed because they’re trying to follow advice from dozens of experts simultaneously.
The result?
Confusion.
Overthinking.
Inaction.
At The Growth Manager, we simplify by starting with the foundations. I often compare building a business to building a house.
I often compare building a business to building a house.
Before you worry about choosing paint colours or decorating the living room, you need solid foundations.
That means reviewing your:
  • Vision
  • Business plan
  • Ideal client
  • Brand positioning
  • Sales strategy
  • Marketing strategy
  • Systems
Only once those foundations are strong should you start focusing on growth activities such as advertising, content creation, and scaling.
Because beautiful marketing built on weak foundations rarely creates sustainable success.

Flow Over Hustle Changed Everything

Before my injury, I was already someone who valued planning and systems. After my injury, they became essential.
Working only 12 to 15 hours per week forced me to become incredibly intentional with my time.
Every hour now has a purpose.
Every task must create value.
Every meeting must matter.
One of the biggest shifts I made was learning to work in flow states.
Instead of constantly switching between emails, social media, meetings and admin, I group similar work together.
I protect uninterrupted time.
I minimise distractions.
And perhaps most importantly, I respect my energy.
There comes a point every day when my brain simply stops.
I often describe it as an old computer with too many windows open.
It crashes.
No amount of determination changes that.
So instead of fighting my capacity, I’ve learnt to design my business around it.
Ironically, that limitation has made me a better mentor.
Because I no longer believe growth comes from working harder.
I know it comes from working smarter.

Organic Marketing Is Still One of the Most Powerful Growth Strategies

Another topic we explored on the podcast was marketing.
People are often surprised when they learn that The Growth Manager has grown primarily through organic marketing.
That’s intentional.
I don’t believe marketing should feel aggressive.
I don’t believe you need to constantly chase algorithms.
And I certainly don’t believe every business needs to spend thousands on paid advertising before they understand their audience.
Instead, our marketing ecosystem is built around trust.
We create:
  • Educational blog articles.
  • Practical Growth Guides.
  • Free business resources.
  • Email newsletters.
  • Social media content.
  • Podcast appearances.
  • Speaking engagements.
  • Community conversations.
Each piece of content is designed to solve a problem.
Do not sell a service.
When people experience value consistently, trust develops naturally.
And trust is one of the strongest drivers of sustainable business growth.

Community Will Always Outperform Cold Selling

One of the things I love most about running The Growth Manager is the community we’ve built.
Whether it’s mentoring through government programs, volunteering with organisations like Mentoring for Growth and Inspiring Rare Birds, speaking at events, or simply answering questions inside our Growth Community, everything comes back to one principle.
Help first.
Sell second.
I’ve never viewed volunteering as a marketing strategy.
I do it because I genuinely believe supporting other business owners strengthens our entire business community.
The referrals.
The partnerships.
The friendships.
Those are simply wonderful by-products of doing meaningful work.
When your reputation is built on generosity, consistency and expertise, opportunities have a way of finding you.
Community compounds. Just like trust.

Stop Trying to Do Everything Yourself

If there was one piece of advice I could give my younger self, it would be this.
Ask for help sooner.
During the podcast, I shared that this is still one of the biggest lessons I’ve learnt.
Like many entrepreneurs, I used to believe that because I could do something, I should.
I can design.
I can market.
I understand finance.
I can build websites.
I know business strategy.
But just because you have the skills doesn’t mean that’s the best use of your time.
Today, I work with an incredible extended team.
We share talented specialists who support everything from websites and graphic design to IT and marketing.
That allows me to spend my limited hours where I create the greatest value.
Mentoring.
Strategy.
Speaking.
Supporting clients.
The same lesson applies to every business owner.
Leadership isn’t about doing everything.
It’s about knowing where your contribution matters most.

Your Business Should Fit Your Life

One of the first conversations I have with every mentoring client isn’t about revenue.
It’s not about marketing.
It’s not even about goals.
It’s about defining success.
Because success looks different for everyone.
Some founders want to scale internationally.
Others want Fridays off.
Some want a team of 50.
Others simply want to earn a comfortable income while being home for school pick-up.
None of those goals is more valid than another.
The important thing is designing a business that supports the life you actually want to live.
Not the life social media tells you to want.
As your life changes, your business should evolve too.
That’s not a failure.
That’s good leadership.

What Sustainable Business Growth Really Looks Like

People often ask me what sustainable growth actually means.
For me, it looks like this.
  • A profitable business.
  • Clear systems.
  • Healthy boundaries.
  • A founder who enjoys running their business.
  • Time for family.
  • Time for holidays.
  • Time to think strategically.
  • Consistent marketing.
  • Loyal clients.
  • Purposeful growth.
Notice what isn’t on that list.
  • Working 80-hour weeks.
  • Constant stress.
  • Burnout.
  • Always being available.
Growth should create freedom, not remove it.

Three Questions Every Founder Should Ask Themselves

If you’ve read this far, I’d encourage you to pause for a moment.
Ask yourself these three questions.

1. Is my business supporting my life or consuming it?

If your business controls every decision you make, something needs to change.
Growth should improve your quality of life.
Do not reduce it.

2. What am I holding onto that someone else could do?

Look at your calendar.
What could be delegated?
Automated?
Simplified?
Removing one low-value task each week creates incredible momentum over time.

3. Am I measuring the right things?

Revenue matters.
But so do:
  • Profit.
  • Capacity.
  • Wellbeing.
  • Client impact.
  • Time freedom.
Success is bigger than one number.

The Future of Business Is Human

One of the reasons I enjoyed speaking with the Founders Future team was that the conversation wasn’t about shortcuts.
It wasn’t about hacking algorithms.
It wasn’t about chasing overnight success.
It was about building businesses that last.
Businesses are built on relationships.
Businesses are built on trust.
Businesses are built on systems.
Businesses are built around people.
That’s exactly what The Growth Manager has always stood for.
And it’s exactly what we’ll continue championing.
